The prophet of the 'Idempotent Doctrine' in the biography compiled by eobchae physically mimics a distributed network that maintains data consistency, synchronizing everyone's breathing and heartbeat. Instead of venerating a central monotheistic deity, it seeks to technically implement a state where all earthly members ‘beat with one heart.’

The altar stained with the blood of saints who attempted to transcend the membrane, and the repeatedly replayed biographies of saints, neither make one believe in the fictional system of civil religion nor turn one into a complete nonbeliever—they are merely traces of an attempt to construct belief itself as some repeatable narrative. Then, can civil religion be seen as a streaming of piety and jest, ritual and technology? In a world where only the form of belief remains without divine beings, what should we believe? What form will the world take when only we ourselves remain as objects of belief?

⟨멱등설⟩은 연산이 반복되어도 결과가 달라지지 않는 성질인 '멱등성(idempotent)'을 한 종교의 교리로 모델링한다. 업체eobchae가 편찬한 전기(biography) 속 '멱등설'의 선지자는 데이터 일관성을 유지하는 분산 네트워크를 신체적으로 모사해 모두의 호흡과 심박 따위를 동기화한다. 중앙의 유일신을 숭앙하는 대신, 지상의 구성원 모두가 "하나의 심장으로 박동하는" 상태를 기술적으로 구현하려는 것이다.

피막을 넘으려던 성인의 피로 칠갑한 제단과 반복 재생되는 성인 전기는 시민 종교의 픽션적 시스템을 믿게 만들지도, 마냥 불신자로 만들지도 않으며, 다만 신념 자체를 어떤 반복 가능한 서사로 구축하고자 한 흔적이다. 그렇다면 시민 종교는 경건과 농담, 의례와 기술의 스트리밍이라 볼 수 있을까? 신적 존재 없이 신념의 형식만 남은 세계에서 우리는 무엇을 믿어야 할까? 믿을 수 있는 대상이 우리밖에 남지 않은 세계는 어떤 모양새를 띠게 될까?
